Mukah was a three and half hour ride from Sibu but the coastal town which serves as the administrative centre of the Mukah District in the Mukah Division of Sarawak seemed so far away. The road which ran through a vast area of oil palm plantations was full of big potholes and it was a bumpy start almost all the way.Mukah used to be a major sago producing area before but most of the peat swamp areas had now been developed into oil palm plantations. The road became better towards the end of the journey and the future seemed rather bright since a new road along the coast was being built. Most probably, this town which used to be an outpost of the Sultanate of Brunei before becoming a part of Sarawak in 1861 would see more visitors in future...
