The Forgotten Johor Zoo at Johor Bahru (Part 1)

Many peoples at Johor Bahru not really notice the Johor Zoo existed (N1°27.518' E103°45.127'). Even some of them know where the Zoo located, but very less of them visit the place. That make me curiously want to visit the Zoo...

The first impression : No Proper Parking area.

Cars are parking along the road

The Main Entrance of the Zoo

"The Johor Bahru Zoo is one of the oldest in the country. It was built in 1928by Sultan Sir Ibrahim and was handed over to the state government to manage in the 1960s and open to the public in 1962.

There are 100 species of animals in the 5ha compound. The entrance charge is RM2 for adults and RM1 for chilren. The zoo opens daily from 8am to 6pm."

The sky seems like not really corporative, once I bought the ticket (MYR2.00)...it started to rain! What I can do was just wait below the shelter....
Once you enter the Zoo, the left of the path are full of birds and parrots.

And on the right, there is a pond for boat riding and some beautiful Pelicans.

The Pelican

After about 15 minutes, the rain stop and I started to walk around.

The Black Parrot

The parrot which love 'French Fries'

You are being monitor....

I started my trip from the left, which are small animals...

Goose farm ??

The white monkey

Indian Spectacled Monkey. Previously been hunted by Police at India.

If the cage below is belong to T-Rex, everyone in the Zoo will be victimize! Poor maintenance.

I believe it's not even capable to cage a Tiger...

Continue on the path, it direct me to this 12 foots Crocodile.

The eye of Crocodile! Not tiger...:)

I don't know the name of the cow above...

Pitiful ostrich!

Flamingo - I like their pink colour long legs

Below are the pictures of the Pelican...

There were many photos I took, but just can't share all of them here....too many!
I finish the left side about 45 minutes and continue walk to the right...

Elephant....

I miss to snap while the elephant splash the water towards the 2 girls!

The magic of the elephant!

The animals in the big cage at the right...

Chimpanzee

The tiger. It's looks calm, but if someone drop into the cage, gone!

The orangutans are a species of great apes. Known for their intelligence, they live in trees and they are the largest living arboreal animal. They have longer arms than other great apes, and their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes....click for more.

Orang Utan

The Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus) is a bear found primarily in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its Malay and Indonesian name is Beruang Madu ("Honey Bear"). Click for more...

The Sun Bear

Basically, the area was good but poor maintenance! The pitiful animals around should have Conducive living environment rather than just a dirty cage...Hopefully, somebody will do something about it....
I will continue to show you some others photos in the next post...

Farzana Wahidy: Burqa

At the age of 24, Farzana Wahidy has been a photographer for Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press. She was born in Afghanistan but now resides in the United States. The National Geographic All Roads Film Festival recently recognized her work by awarding her seed money and equipment to assist in her field work.

In an interview, she said:
" I wasn’t at all interested in photography before. I wanted to be a journalist. I thought I could travel around as a journalist. I wanted to tell the world about the situation in Afghanistan. Above all, I wanted to be free and independent. I always had to work to support my family. One day, I found out about these film and photojournalism courses and I applied. I was 17 -- I thought they wouldn’t accept me because I was too young. So I changed the date of birth in my passport. Two weeks later I found out I had been accepted."

Farzana was initially trained at Aina Photo Agency (founded by Reza), and her work in Afghanistan is remarkable. It underscores how many indigenous photographers and photojournalists are often better storytellers than non-indigenous professionals, and gives the photographs an imprimatur of authenticity..

Ad For Canon 5D II Video

Here is a 200-second promotional video from Canon for the 5D Mark II that essentially showcases the various Canon lenses that can be used to produce such a video. The ad's soundtrack is annoying, but what is most annoying is that I have yet to be able to produce a half decent video with mine.

Video-making is not as easy as one would think, especially when engrossed in making still photographs, then switching to video mode as an afterthought, or just to record a few moments of video. It takes a different mindset, focus, training and resolve...and a tripod would be useful.

Take Five! Crocodile Talk

South Africa is said to be the home of Crocodylus niloticus or the Nile crocodile and is a producer of top quality first grade crocodile skins. I suppose then the River Nile in Egypt should have crocodiles lurking around somewhere and I shudder now as I thought of the night when my friends and I took a felucca down the Nile River in Aswan and spent a night on its bank. Surprisingly, there wasn't a feeling of fear of crocodiles when I visited the crocodile farm in Miri, Sarawak last year. There were many live crocodiles there and one had its skin hung harmlessly on a wall of the exhibition room. It was there that I took this photo

Java Jamboree will be back!

Italy Restaurant at Taman Perling, Johor Bahru

This Italy Restaurant (N1°28.777' E103°40.963') located next to Yew's Cafe of Taman Perling (Persiaran Perling 1), Johor Bahru.
They serve authentic foods of Italy, and also one of the Italian original taste Cafe at Johor bahru. (Recommended by my friend -Lok)

If I'm not mistaken, the business hour is noon to 10pm. When we found the restaurant during that night, it's almost 9pm. So we only left one hour to go.....

Our order :-
1) Lamb Chop
2) Grill Chicken Chop
3) Mushroom Salad
4) Mushroom soup & Garlic Bread (For my daughter)

The Lamb Chop of Italy Restaurant

Grilled Chicken Chop with rice

Mushroom Salad

I forgot to snap the Mushroom Soup & Garlic Bread. :)

Overall, we LOVE the Lamb Chop very much! It's SPECIAL and delicious!! It's cost MYR23.00 with big portion.
Grilled Chicken rice was nothing to shout about, average. The Mushroom Salad also nice! Because they fried it well, and it's not Oily.
My daughter love her mushroom soup, the Garlic Bread & the mushroom salad very much!

I love the environment. It's a idea place to dine here. I believe this restaurant will be Full on every Valentine Day! Haha! Because it's quite romantic...

The damage : MYR49.00 (For 2 adults & 1 child)
I felt the price was justify with the foods and atmosphere.

Rated : 4/5

Minimalist Photo Gear

I'm planning to travel to Cairo for around 10 days, and finally took the plunge in reducing the load of photographic gear I normally take with me. Since the trip is not one of my group photo~expeditions nor a workshop, but will involve a couple of self-assignments, I can afford to pare it down.

Here's my list:

1. Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch Mini Laptop (1.6 GHz Intel Atom, 1gb RAM, Windows XP) on which I downloaded Soundslides (my favorite slideshow maker), Audacity (free audio editor) and GIMP (instead of power-hungry CS). I may add Lightroom but download it on a memory stick. I'm a hard-core Mac user, so I'm still very uncomfortable using XP, but the netbook's feather-like weight is incredible. The display while small, is magnificent and I look at it as a souped-up Epson P7000 at less than half its price.

I read on the internets that hardy souls install OSX on it, but that's above my tech pay grade, so I'll keep using the XP for a while.

2. A 250gb G-Tech Mini G-Drive External Hard Drive with both FireWire and USB 2.0 for increased portability. I formatted it be used for both Mac and Win, and it works like a charm. It's a tiny little thing, that weighs less than 9 oz.

3. My new Domke F3-X will take the above gear, plus my Canon 5D2 and two lenses (I'll leave the 70-200mm 2.8 behind), and my Marantz PMD620 audio recorder. It has other pockets in which I can put mt CF cards, and whatever other whatsits I carry with me. All I need to do is to put it in a washing machine and dryer, and it'll be broken in just fine. Maybe cover the Domke logo with gaffer tape, and I'm set to go.

I just read this in the New York Times:

Apple’s COO Tim Cook :“They have cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens, and just not a consumer experience, and not something that we would put the Mac brand on, quite frankly. And so, it’s not a space as it exists today that we are interested in, nor do we believe that customers in the long term would be interested in. It’s a segment we would choose not to play in."

Damn!

Diabolo Performance at Bukit Gambir, Muar

Surprisingly spotted this 'Forgotten Sport' at Bukit Gambir, Muar during attending a lunch at restaurant.

"The Diabolo (commonly misspelled as diablo; formerly also known as "the devil on two sticks") is a juggling prop consisting of a spool which is whirled and tossed on a string tied to two sticks held one in each hand. A huge variety of tricks are possible using the sticks, string, and various body parts. Multiple diabolos can be spun on a single string."
You can read about Diabolo at Wiki.

The 'Dumbell'

You watch the performance video down below....

The performer also a Diabolo Instructor for Johor Bahru & Singapore.

I'm wondering that, how many of the young generation now know about this sport?
